This week children have been introduced to the traditional tale of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. We have created our role play area to incorporate grandmas house, with her bedroom and the woods that little red walks through. The children helped decorate some of the trees for the woods.
The children have enjoyed taking part in the different roles. They have listened to the story during group times and have then re-enacted it using props to support this.
Whilst keeping the theme in mind we have made supported the children with their number recognition and representation. During this activity they had to use scissors to cut the baskets which also supports developing their physical skills.
At the beginning of the week we started our visits back at big school for story time. Every Monday afternoon we will be going down to see a teacher in KS1. To begin with we will take our school leavers down with us, using the quieter time to give our younger children who remain in the preschool the opportunity to have some small group activities to support them. We are very fortunate to have these opportunities as it helps the children in preparation for their transition to primary school.
The children are enjoying getting out to play tennis with the balls and rackets. However this week the code on the gate wouldn’t let us in so unfortunately the children didn’t go on the tennis courts but did have a play on the basketball court next door! I don’t think they were too worried!
We had our visit to the care home again on Wednesday afternoon. We took the same group of children again for the second week. We have found that by taking the same group for two consecutive weeks helps build the confidence of the children who were a little quieter on their first visit. They were much more confident on this second visit. They teamed up with the residents to play different games such as snap and darts. Next week we will be taking a different group for their visits.

This week Miss Warren has been on part 1 of her renewing her first aid certificate. The team also stayed after work one evening and we discussed the setting in preparation for our upcoming ofsted inspection (yikes!). This was a great opportunity to talk about our strengths and we think makes Compton preschool great and things we would like to work on to improve. We really believe reflection is key to improve and to help the children continue ‘to be the best I can be’.
All parents should have been sent our spring term newsletter with some important information in this. If you haven’t received it please check your junk box.
Have a good weekend!
