This week we have done lots of activities and taken advantage of the lovely weather to visit the park more than once. Our week began with a walk to collect autumn leaves, which led to lots of discussion about changes in nature and seasonal cycles.
We then used our leaves to make prints and pictures, talking about the colours used and practising fine motor skills with the paintbrushes.
We also had a go at dancing footprints this week, so if you noticed some painty toes we hope you weren’t too surprised! The children love this activity and we find that it is an excellent opportunity for them to use their skills of sharing and cooperation as they paint each others’ feet. Moving to music is also part of the curriculum and the children really give it their all!
We made gingerbread men this week. Cooking activities are a good way to develop a lot of mathematical skills, as the children measure ingredients and become more familiar with numbers and counting (for example, estimating how many men we can fit on the baking tray). It is also an opportunity to talk about the importance of good hygiene practises, such as hand washing.
As the weather has remained so kind this week, we had another opportunity to go for a walk. We chose to include a nature spotting activity this time and the children had a great time looking for various objects and animals. Observing the natural world is a fascinating experience for everyone and there was lots of excitement.
Thanks to everyone who sent in a baby photo. We looked at them this week and tried to guess who was who. Some people had changed a lot, but others were very recognisable!
Finally (what a busy week it has been!), we had our weekly visit to ‘big school’ for a story. We do this throughout the year and we find that it is a fantastic preparation for children as they become acclimatised to primary school before they move up. The children get to meet the teachers and familiarise themselves with the different surroundings.
