This week we have been celebrating the queen’s (official) birthday and the (real) birthday of Prince Philip! We read lots of stories with a royal theme, such as Queen Victoria’s knickers and also made crowns to wear at our majestic tea party on Friday.
For our tea party we made the traditional regal treat of jam tarts (if you are the queen of hearts anyway!) Miss Warren found that the children made better pastry than she did and the tarts looked delicious!
We had the opportunity to buy lots of new equipment this week, which has been very popular. The children particularly enjoyed our new den which we have kitted out with a CD player, headphones and other technological toys. Operating such things is part of the curriculum, although we find that many of the children are more confident with them than we are!
We bought a dark tent which has caused a lot of excitement! We are able to use our torches and light up sensory toys inside and have created some fantastic light shows!
As we have had some nice weather (on and off!) this week, we have played outside a lot. The children played a game where they tried to throw the bean bag into the basket, which was quite difficult!
We also had sack races!
This has been good practice for our sports day, which will take place on the afternoon of Friday 12th July. Keep your diaries free for this if you can as it will be a sporting extravaganza! It will take place at Greenacres as they have such a lovely big outdoor space and the residents like to come out and help to cheer us on. Actual times will be confirmed nearer the date.
As you will probably have seen, many of the children planted seeds in pots on the path this week. We are encouraging them to look after these independently and they love to tell us when they have watered them. We are looking forward to when the seeds germinate as this should be very exciting for the children. We are planning to plant some more next week so if your child has yet to do this they will get a chance to do so.
Throughout this term we will be concentrating on ‘school readiness’ as many of our children will be leaving us for primary school in July. Self help skills are really important as children who can perform simple tasks like putting on their own coats and shoes and organising their own belongings find the transition to big school much easier. You should have received a letter about this recently and practice at home is very beneficial too. 🙂
Some achievements this week! One of our children received a dancing certificate which they shared with us at circle time. Very well done! 👏
Another member of the group made a fantastic scrapbook of their recent holiday which was lovely to look at. 👏
The makaton sign this week was ‘snack’ and our letter of the week next week will be ‘l’.
On a personal note I had my last week of the Early Years SENCo Award qualification course this week and I’m glad to say that I managed to pass! It was hard work but very rewarding and instructive. Sharon (Mrs Matthews) and I are invited to a celebration afternoon next month at the university, so we will try to take a photo to post then!
