This week we had more new resources, which included lots of games. The children were very interested in these and chose to dedicate time to playing with them. As well as being a lot of fun, games are really good for sharing and turn taking skills. They also can reinforce other aspects of the curriculum. Twister is a way of reinforcing colour recognition and is also good for physical development (we’d forgotten how hard it is- we’re obviously out of practise!)
This game promotes counting skills and fine motor control:
We have begun having open door visits to big school. This gives our children who are due to leave for school a chance to go into the foundation classrooms and see what it’s all about. Sam Matthews went on a course which focused on ‘school readiness’ this week. The importance of self help skills was emphasised and we will be concentrating on these over the next few weeks. Children who can dress and undress themselves, manage their own coats and shoes and go to the toilet and wash their hands independently have a head start when they begin school and find the experience less challenging. As well as the practise they get here, it’s important that you try to reinforce this at home. Although allowing your child to do these things for themselves can be a little frustrating and take time, doing so is a fantastic opportunity to foster their development! 👍😃
Many children are bringing in books from home for us to read, which is lovely. We have had lots of wonky donkeys, dogs and a supertato and evil pea this week! We gets lots of activity ideas from the reactions to these stories, which is great because we like to plan based on the interests and enthusiasms of the children.
This week our makaton sign has been ‘toilet’ and our letter of the week next week will be ‘r’.
